The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has allocated funds to UC campuses to support the development and advancement of university employees. Beginning in 1978 UCOP provided this funding to promote the dual objectives of employee development and affirmative action. A portion of those funds has been set aside at UCI in the form of staff development scholarships in order to support the professional development and career advancement of eligible employees.
Objectives
- To assist career staff in developing knowledge and skills that enhance their current positions or improve their qualifications for advancement at UCI.
- To promote employee development and ensure the quality and diversity of UCI's workforce.
Guidelines
The Award
- Awards will be granted for financial assistance of up to $500 per award (beginning 2005-06).
- Applications will be approved based on eligibility and fund availability.
- Staff development/training may include conferences, seminars, workshops, University or Extension courses, or any other skill development activity related to the employee's current position or desired promotional opportunities.
- Registration Fee ONLY will be awarded for UC-sponsored events.
- Expenses that are not eligible for reimbursement include: travel and accommodations, office space, supplies and equipment.
Applicants
Past award recipients are not eligible for two full academic years after receiving a Staff Development Scholarship. If you received an award in the past, future eligibility is as follows:

Career employees must have completed the six-month probation period. Contract employees with wording in their contracts stating their eligibility for UCI training and development benefits may be considered if 1) the length of the contract or continuous employment as a contract employee is greater than one year and 2) the employee has been employed in the current position for at least six months.
Application Process
The application can be completed and submitted online or printed and mailed to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, 103 MSTB , ZOT 1130, for approval at least four weeks prior to the activity.
Proof of costs, registration, and a copy of the catalog page or brochure showing planned activity, registration fees, date/duration, and location must be sent to OEOD before the award will be considered.
Applicant will be notified via intercampus mail of the status of their application.
Post-Activity Documentation
Recipients must submit the following documentation to OEOD no later than 45 days after the approved activity:
- Proof of having completed the approved activity, e.g., a passing grade, a letter from the instructor, a certificate.
- ORIGINAL receipts showing payment of tuition, registration fees, books, seminar/conference fees or other directly related costs. Please DO NOT staple receipts or paperwork together. If receipt is smaller than 8 1/2" by 11" tape receipts to an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of paper.
- A brief statement of the benefits provided by the scholarship and an indication of whether or not any positive career mobility (promotion, reclassification, merit increase) occurred or will occur as a result of the activity.
Reimbursement
Reimbursement will be made to either an individual or to their department, but not both.
If the employee's department pays for any or all of an activity, the department can be reimbursed by submitting a FINANCIAL JOURNAL to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity with the department's account name, account number, fund number, signature of the authorizing individual and documentation specified above. Department bookkeepers may contact OEOD for coordination of departmental reimbursement.
