Perioperative Pediatric Behavioral Health

Position: Associate Specialist

This notice details an excellent opportunity in clinical health Psychology for one motivated individual who is interested in cutting-edge research in the field of perioperative pediatric behavioral health.  The Center for the Advancement of Perioperative Health is a collaborative group from diverse areas in medicine and psychology and represents a unique opportunity to experience multi-disciplinary research and to see how psychology can have tremendous influence in the medical field.  Projects involve examining parent-child interactions, collecting data regarding the impact of anxiety on postoperative recovery, and studies that explore the use of complementary and alternative medicine within the perioperative environment.

The successful candidates will work under the direction of a PhD level psychologist in a new laboratory collecting data, recruiting patients, taking observer measures of anxiety and coding parent-child communications.  We are looking for bright, enthusiastic and motivated people who work well with others and who have some understanding of clinical research.

Minimum Requirements: Masters Degree in psychology or related fields is preferred.  Experience in pain management is mandatory.  Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are needed, but will consider candidates with partial Spanish fluency for one of the position openings.  For more information about CAPH, please view our website at www.perioperativehealth.org.

Position: Postdoctoral Scholar

Two postdoctoral positions will be available in the Multidisciplinary Exercise Science program.  We are currently seeking postdoctoral fellows who have a strong interest in skeletal muscle plasticity, especially as it applies to microgravity. The program consists of three different core programs: 1) Molecular Physiology core; 2) Systems Physiology core; and 3) the Clinical Applications core.  The overall goal of this training program is to develop scientists with a strong integrative approach (molecular-to-systems physiology) in the field of exercise science and skeletal muscle plasticity.  Additionally, each candidate will be provided with a rich clinical exposure to strengthen the integrative nature of the program.

The current quarterly salary for one course is $5,259.24 The service period for the quarters is: Fall 2008 (9/22/08-12/12/08), Winter 2009 (1/2/09-3/20/09), Spring 2009 (3/25/09-6/12/09).

Requirements - Required: Minimum requirements are a PhD or MA in English or Comparative Literature, an MFA in Creative Writing, or an MA in Applied Linguistics, ESL, or a related field, plus three years of teaching experience in a theoretically sophisticated university program.  Candidates should have filed their dissertation or thesis by July 31, 2008 to be eligible.

Application Procedure: Applicants must submit a letter of application specifically addressing their qualifications as a teacher of composition, a current curriculum vitae, a complete set of recent teaching evaluations, and a list of references.  The letter of application, typically two pages long, should address in some detail the applicant’s experience and teaching performance to demonstrate such teaching qualities as: command of the subject matter and continued growth in mastering new areas within rhetoric and composition; ability to organize and present course materials, ability to awaken in students an awareness of the importance of the subject matter; and ability to promote future student achievement.

Tropical Atmospheric Dynamics

Position: Postdoctoral Scholar

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work on innovative research in tropical atmospheric dynamics, with close collaboration with groups in Computer Science (Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems) and Statistics at UCI.  The successful candidate will work on topics relevant to tracking of tropical disturbances and variability in the ITCZ.  The research will focus on relating tracks (including genesis and lysis), ITCZ activity and intensity of disturbances to the atmosphere/ocean state.

Requirements - Scientists with a strong background in tropical meteorology, large-scale atmospheric dynamics and possessing excellent computational and statistical skills are encouraged to apply.  A PhD in atmospheric or related sciences is required.  The initial appointment is for one year.  Position is dependent on extramural funding and research contracts of individual PI’s.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
